The Undergraduate Leadership Ventures provide a set of engaged, hands-on experiences for
exploring and mastering the capabilities for effective individual and team leadership in
business and beyond. They are intended to assist participants in improving their capacities
to think strategically, communicate effectively, and act decisively. Ventures are designed
to foster forward thinking, a bias for action, risk awareness, and fast decisions. The longer
ventures (Grand Teton Mountaineering and Patagonian Trek) include social impact projects designed
to heighten cultural understanding and assist local communities.
The Graduate Leadership Ventures are optional co-curricular experiential learning opportunities
designed to bring participants into remote and difficult environments where they can learn from
experience in confronting challenges, solving problems, and leading teams. We do this by providing
a foundation for individual, small group, and community-level learning by structuring periods of
personal reflection and guided discussion around specific activities. Key topics such as leadership
and followership, group decision-making processes, stages of group development, and managing ambiguity
are explored using daily events as the foundation for learning. In every case, students are expected
to act decisively and take accountability for the outcomes of their decisions.
